A nice little daily warm-up (and cool-down!)
followed by a bit of prenatal yoga and stretching, relaxing in the cool basement bedroom with the kids, and packing dinner for an afternoon and evening trip to either Sauvie Island for blackberry picking or Wahclella Falls for cool spray on a 100 degree Portland day!
We've had really great weather for most of our stay in Portland so far (knock on wood). It's often cool and cloudy in the mornings, but turns hot by late afternoon. Gg is loving all of the parks and playgrounds with water here and we've started eating about one meal a day out in the fresh air, picnic style.
Last night we had dinner up the street at the Peninsula Park Rose Garden and today we had our afternoon snack at Irving Park - just a couple minutes a way and a huge favorite for both the playground and child-controlled fountains (the kids can run over, push a button and turn them back on after each cycle has ended). Due to all of the folks, and even a dog, (sanitary, I know) playing in the giant fountain at the rose gardens, we assumed it was another public wading pool - although I admit, given the setting, I was a bit surprised. We didn't see the sign until we were on our way out...
The other great resource that is just a few blocks away is SCRAP. A re-sale craft store that has all kinds of bins of goodies - from vintage hankerchiefs and wooden spools, to artist pens and acrylic paint, to shelves full of vintage fabrics and skeins of wool yarn. You have to really pick through it, admittedly, but there are tons of treasures for cheap. The kids can come in here with a couple dollars or less and walk away with a bagful of junk craft supplies;) Today's score: numerous vintage kerchiefs, ribbon and seam binding for the dolls, handspun pink wool yarn and brown velvet, a pair of vintage yellow knitted baby socks, a few linoleum blocks and some wooden castle pieces for gg.
Here it is, the eve of July (the purported beginning of summer in Montana) and after nine long months of waiting for summer to return - we're leaving for the summer!
For reasons primarily out of our control, we're heading to Portland, Oregon for the next two months at least - not for pleasure, but I hope it will at least prove to be a positive and healing experience - I'll leave it at that. And there are certainly worse places to be stranded.
I'll be setting up shop in our apartment there and cranking out - I mean lovingly sewing - as many dolls as possible. To pay the bills, take us to 3 dollar second run theatres, a bit of thrift shopping, the occasional food cart, flowers for the kitchen table, stamps for postcards and packages, supplies for crafting. (The beginning of a Portland to do list...) We leave Tuesday, after about a week and a half's notice, and I still have an enormous amount of work to do before then! So I better go get to it.
Day 4: Portland, OR - sunny and warm! - the zoo, eating, walking, swimming, looking, standing in line - ugh.
