Pepper, at 15 months now, loves to read; to look at books and be read to. She has quite a store of board and baby books to choose from and of course has some absolute favorites. Just thought I'd share a few.
My favorite artist from my own early childhood stories was Gyo Fujikawa. I stumbled upon his book, Babies, at the thrift store months ago and Pepper loves it! She loves babies. The writing is a little funny "Sometimes they are naughty... And sometimes they are little angels... But good or bad, all babies like to be hugged and cuddled and loved." If you aren't put off by this, then this book (and many of his others) is wonderful!
Another board book favorite around here, with beautiful artwork - I especially love Patricia Polacco's style. Mommies Say Shhh!
Lift the flap favorites (both out of print I believe, but can be ordered used):
But, by far, the favorite board book in our home, from the moment we found it at the library bookstore in Portland, has been El carnaval de los animales. We love this Spanish board book! It is unusually long, but as long as we keep up the pace, Pepper asks for this one again and again. She also chuckles along with the story, which is priceless!
Other Spanish board book loves include:
Any of the books by Brian Wildsmith - beautiful images that Pepper loves - simple text. As well as some of these other more well known authors, translated.
Honorable mention: Pepper loves the little books in Maurice Sendack's Nutshell Library. She carries the little red books around with her often.
As we discover new loves and Pepper has the patience to sit through longer stories, I'll update!
Is it too early for summer dreaming? I'm taking a break from the veggie garden this summer and focusing on flowers - in particular, creating a flower garden in the front yard. So many people here only have green lawns in front and keep all of their garden space in back. This summer I want to bring our flowers out front where they can be enjoyed by passersby (I'll have to work out the passing deer part...)
Eating pineapple frozen yogurt in a glass. A trip to the library for To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway - already loving the first. Bows and collars stitched, chubby fingers kissed, baby bunnies to feed. Red wine to drink in the shade in the grass and read some more, and then writing after dark.
Walked downtown and about, running errands for two hours with sleeping baby in sling. ouch. With the snow melting now it is time to get a stroller! Two months old and I'm guessing that she's up to about 15 pounds!
48 degrees out and it feels like Spring. Made russian tea cookies last night and have eaten too many today. But Dave is warming up the shrimp etouffee from last night. And I'm off to try out a new doll idea...
Vive le printemps!
The sweater dresses are back!
After years of not having a model in the house small enough to sport them for my etsy shop photos, (and I'll admit - never having bothered to make a proper pattern to use once my model had outgrown the previous size!) the sweater dresses are back "in production". And this is the smallest I've ever made them. I stitched up a little prototype a few weeks back for Pepper, and it looks like a doll dress - so sweet!
I now have an honest to goodness pattern and will be attempting to list a few new sweater dresses each week, size 3-6 months for the time being, so stay tuned!
Here is the newest addition to the shop (baby not included):
Artist, printmaker, mother, traveler, seamstress, singer, baker of sweet things...
