Pepper, at 15 months now, loves to read; to look at books and be read to. She has quite a store of board and baby books to choose from and of course has some absolute favorites. Just thought I'd share a few.
My favorite artist from my own early childhood stories was Gyo Fujikawa. I stumbled upon his book, Babies, at the thrift store months ago and Pepper loves it! She loves babies. The writing is a little funny "Sometimes they are naughty... And sometimes they are little angels... But good or bad, all babies like to be hugged and cuddled and loved." If you aren't put off by this, then this book (and many of his others) is wonderful!
Another board book favorite around here, with beautiful artwork - I especially love Patricia Polacco's style. Mommies Say Shhh!
Lift the flap favorites (both out of print I believe, but can be ordered used):
But, by far, the favorite board book in our home, from the moment we found it at the library bookstore in Portland, has been El carnaval de los animales. We love this Spanish board book! It is unusually long, but as long as we keep up the pace, Pepper asks for this one again and again. She also chuckles along with the story, which is priceless!
Other Spanish board book loves include:
Any of the books by Brian Wildsmith - beautiful images that Pepper loves - simple text. As well as some of these other more well known authors, translated.
Honorable mention: Pepper loves the little books in Maurice Sendack's Nutshell Library. She carries the little red books around with her often.
As we discover new loves and Pepper has the patience to sit through longer stories, I'll update!
